Globalization and global changes: implications for food (meat) demand, value chain and trade

Income-driven global dietary transition has long been recognized as a primary force shaping the food industry. Globalization in the forms of reduced trade costs, increased FDI and integrated global value chains has facilitated this transition for the benefits of consumers in food importing and producers in exporting countries (such as Denmark). Recent setbacks of the globalization agenda, however, may cause significant damages to these linkages that are vital to the Danish food industries. This lecture first reviews this literature and sets out the related research agenda. A second research agenda to be discussed is on how future national and international regulatory framework under which the food industry operates may be re-shaped by government and societal responses to global changes in the climate and environment arena. Such responses, while imposing apparent constraints on the food industry, may also stimulate food industry innovations with the food industry as an active influencer rather than a mere passive subject of new regulations.
