Seminar: Problem-feeding and Interdisciplinarity: some lessons from sustainability research

Henrik Thorén, Researcher at Lund University, will will present some of his recent research on the challenges of interdisciplinary studies, particularly within sustainability research.

Title: Problem-feeding and Interdisciplinarity: some lessons from sustainability research

Abstract

The need for scientific integration and interdisciplinary research is often lauded not just as desirable, but even necessary, in order to tackle pressing problems like climate change. The precise nature of interdisciplinarity as such, however, remains somewhat elusive. In this paper I will examine a particular form of interdisciplinary exchange that has often been overlooked in the literature, namely the exchange of problems between disciplines (here labeled problem-feeding). I will begin by giving an introduction to what problem-feeding is, its prerequisites, promises and challenges, and then move to discuss a number of cases where problems have—or should have—been transferred between disciplines. It will be argued that focusing on the transfer of problems reveals an alternative way of understanding what problem-oriented interdisciplinarity is and what it requires from those engaging in it.

The seminar is open to all.
