Maria Cariola Eriksson

Postdoc

I am an anthropologist and PhD candidate in Political Ecology at the Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen.

Primary fields of research

My work lies at the intersection between political ecology, anthropology, geography and political economy. I have a broad interest in the politics of energy infrastructure, ‘green’ finance, extractivism, resource conflicts and militarization. I have lived and conducted research in Latin America, mainly in Chile.

Current research

In my PhD project I investigate the Chilean boom in renewable energy by following the advance of wind energy projects into Wallmapu, contested Mapuche territories of the Chilean Central-South. I focus on the role of European (green) capital and companies in the energy transition, and trace how their arrival re-configures local land conflicts, and how, in turn, local sites of extraction affect globalized corporate network and energy infrastructure. The project is based on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork between the province of Malleco and Santiago.

Teaching

This year I teach the MSc course Interdisciplinary Field Research. I supervise students at the Global Development MSc.
