Antimicrobial resistance and infections in low-income countries
In my role as vice-dean for education the main focus is health education. Apart from the leadership role I also take part in educational research projects.
I still work with malaria pathogenesis with the aim of improving management of patients in in Sub-Saharan Africa. The malaria work has mainly taken place in Ghana in collaboration with Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research but has also to a large extent been experimental. I also have an interest in the interplay between nutrition and infections and have studied this in Ghana and Ethiopia. For this purpose, we have established a mass spectrometric method for quantification of hepcidin at our department.
I also participate in development of new diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of parasitic diseases.
I have been involved in studies of bacterial infections in neonates and children. With University of Ghana I am presently winding up a project on healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance (HAI-Ghana) and I am now involved in an ICARS-financed study in Kyrgizstan aiming at reducing antibiotic use in children with airway infections.
Teaching
As vice dean of education I work with faculty leadership, study administration, university departments, numerous teachers - and not least our students to run and constantly develop our study programs. We have constant dialogue with the Regions and municipalities, private health practitioners and pharmacies, life science industry and other players that are targeted by our educations in order to sharpen our courses and programs. It is my ambition that we should offer education at the highest international level that are proactive and equip our.
We have approximately 8000 students enrolled in our six schools – MedSchool, VetSchool, PharmaSchool, OdontSchool, School of Public Health, and Globe Institute and I encourage you to visit our website to learn more about them all.
As previous head of medical studies and course leader in clinical microbiology I have developed study programs, teaching materials, lectures and laboratory practicals, and I have written text book chapters on parasitology.
I have supervised a high number of pre- and postgraduate students at Danish, Ghanaian, Nigerian, Kyrgyz, German, French, and Swedish Universities or other institutions and continue my role as supervisor that I find highly rewarding.
