Antecedents to Bootlegging and Its Consequences for Organizations

On 29 September, Dr. Birgit Peña Häufler is visiting us from the Technische Universität Berlin to present some of her most recent innovation findings based on more than 900 respondents from 124 firms.

Antecedents to bootlegging and its consequences for organizations

Bootlegging, or the emergence of bottom-up, unplanned ideation activities through which individuals initiate and elaborate on innovation projects without organizational authorization, has been investigated mostly from an individual perspective, uncovering factors like self-efficacy or need for achievement as relevant antecedents. However, there is little knowledge on what organizational factors further the emergence of such behavior as well as on the consequences for such behavior for organizations. As such, we take an organizational perspective on the phenomenon of bootlegging. This presentation provides an overview of a study conducted with more than 900 respondents from 124 firms, which illustrates the role played by specific management practices for the emergence of bootlegging as well as its potential for orgnaizations in terms of innovation outcomes.
