Road Traffic Noise and Nature Recreation Choices - A Combined Revealed Preference and Stated Preference Analysis

Open online seminar with Abrha Teklay Abay, Department of Food and Resource Economics.

Speaker's description of seminar:

The experience of silence is a significant part of the enjoyment people derive from nature recreation. Yet, the economic cost of noise in outdoor nature recreation settings is rarely quantified.

In our study, we combined a multi-site travel cost survey (revealed preference, RP) with a choice experiment survey (stated preference, SP) to examine how road traffic noise affects visits to open-access nature areas.

When estimated separately, RP and SP models produced markedly different willingness-to-pay (WTP) values for avoiding traffic noise. By integrating both datasets, the joint RP-SP model generated intermediate WTP estimates and, especially at high noise levels, greater precision.

Finally, we applied these results to evaluate the recreational welfare impacts of alternative planned highway routes in Viborg in Denmark.
