The Beginnings of Musical Notation and Carolingian Uses of the Term 'Sacrament'

In this essay, I propose to use recent musicological discussions as a background for a theologically based, sweeping cultural-historical grand narrative about musical notation and music's theological position in the Middle Ages, including also a view up to modernity.
