N2 - This book tells the story of the trials and tribulations of the Reverend Tunis G Campbell along the coast of South Carolina and Georgia in the period of Reconstruction, after the American Civil War. Campbell was an African American community organizer who rose to the Georgia Senate while he protected the newly-freed slaves trying to build lives in the shattered but glorious aftermath of the war. In the end, Campbell lost to the patriarchs of white supremacy and was sent to work in a chain-gang labor camp while African Americans in his district were relegated to unequal and discriminatory reversals from freedom to quasi-slavery.
