Regional Nordic Hub (RNH)

To understand the influence of a Regional Nordic Hub (RNH) in the Nordic Bioeconomy, the focus is to increase and strengthen a Nordic public private partnership model to collaborate in beneficial market opportunities in the fields of production patterns, bioprocessing and breeding techniques of plant-based proteins innovation (e.g.: Green protein: Lupins, Faba beans, Field pea, Field beans, Spring turnip rape, Spring oil seed rape, Ryegrass, Red clover, White clover, Lucerne (alfalfa); Blue protein: seaweed, mussels, starfish, macro-microalgae, and possibly Yellow protein: insects) in the region. Therefore, the background of this project includes key points that are essential to understand a regional development in terms of the bioeconomy strategies that focus on the protein industry.
The sustainable production of biomass in the Nordic region seeks to increase the use of biomass products in a number of different sectors of society with the intention to reduce climate impact, and as a response of the high import of soy protein, the momentum to reinvent extraction techniques and new development of alternative protein production systems has represent a challenge for the Nordic countries. At the same time, the region seeks to pioneer this 'sustainable shift' that is taking place but seems to be lacking a regional platform for integration, where sectors such as Food & Beverage, Scientific Research, Development and Innovation, Capacity Building & Implementation, start-ups, SME's and private sector can gather to increase knowledge capacities and implementation for innovation based on plant-based protein production for feed and food. Moreover, the region is characterized with a large concentration of biomass from both land and sea. Whether the majority of the biomass is comprised of wood, fish or agricultural products varies from country to country. As such, each Nordic country has different focus areas, but all with a common belief in the various economic, environmental, social and health-related issues; the Nordic countries recognize the opportunities arising from a strengthened bioeconomy system.
