Enacting Sacred Narrative: Biblical, Liturgical, and Sacramental Practices in the Latin West

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapterResearchpeer-review

This article discusses the Versus de resuscitacione Lazari (the Raising of Lazarus), one of the ten so-called liturgical dramas of the famous twelfth-century Fleury Playbook. The article contextualizes the ceremony within recent scholarship on medieval liturgical enactments, also concerning the possible impact which contemporary changes in sacramental understanding may have made on such practices. The article further focuses on the relationship between the enactment and its biblical basis in the Gospel of John. Strangely, the biblical details concerning Lazarus’ resurrection were not taken into consideration in the rubrics of the Fleury text.
