My main research focus area is forest politics and forest governance in the Global South with a particular focus on decentralization and participation. More recently, I have also worked with the importance and effect of EU’s FLEGT-VPA program (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade/ Voluntary Partnership Agreements) and REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). I have experience from research and advisory services in developing countries since 1985, and have travelled to and worked in South and Southeast Asia and East Africa regularly since 1985. Currently, I supervise five international PhD students working with topics similar to my own research field, and I have conducted several PhD courses in qualitative methods and case study research. I have supervised more than 30 MSc theses on a variety of topics ranging from community forestry and REDD+ in Cambodia, over land titles and livelihood in Mexico, to participatory agricultural projects and climate change negotiations. I have also supervised bachelor projects and other projects. I coordinate and teach two graduate courses, one in Global Environmental Governance (, and one in Qualitative Methods in Agricultural Development.
