This chapter introduces the main themes of this book and situates the practice of biotechnological tools applied to research animals within the broader setting of animal research and the ethical discussion attached to that. Further, this chapter provides a brief overview of the technological development since the 1980s and an overview of the number of GM animals used in research. Finally, there is a brief introduction to the content of the book and an explanation of the use of key terms in the book.
