Community based Natural Forest Management in the Himalayas III - ComForM III
PROJECT IS COMPLETED
Project period: 01 October 2012 - 30 September 2014
Community based forest management in the Himalayas phase III (ComForM III) uses and expands unique time-series data created in phases I and II (2003-20010) to study household-level climate change adaptation strategies in Nepal.
Community based forest management in the Himalayas phase III (ComForM III) uses and expands unique time-series data created in phases I and II (2003-20010) to study household-level climate change adaptation strategies in Nepal. The project is jointly developed and implemented by the Institute of Forestry in Nepal (IOF), the Department of Forest Research and Survey in Nepal (DFRS) and the Global Development Section at the Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) at the University of Copenhagen. The overall objective of the project is: Improved livelihoods through sustainable and equitable management of forest resources in Nepal. Immediate objectives are (i) To provide improved understanding of dynamic livelihood-forest interactions in response to climate change through integrated studies in three Physiographic zones of Nepal, and (ii) to develop increased capacity for undertaking high quality climate related research on forest and natural resources management at key forestry research institutions in Nepal. Research methodologies include social household surveys, forest surveys, semi-structured interviews and social-ecological model building. Capacity building is mainly based on joint research development, implementation and dissemination. Outputs include PhD students, international scientific papers, national/regional scientific papers, time series data on livelihood-forest links from 533 households and 241 forest plots. Research will contribute to the development of climate resilient, equitable and effective management of community forests in Nepal to the benefit of especially poor and marginalised rural households.
